for me, (well frankly it's probably as others said random impulses in my brain that have attached to something dumb), I've rationalized it as being the ultimate form of caring for someone. Your SO literally needs you to take care of their potty needs and loves you for it. That's adorable and shows a vulnerability and closeness that's hard to explain. The crux of abdl imo is either wanting someone else to be able to play and be happy without a single adult thought or to be that person. Messing/wetting is just the ultimate expression of that really.
