Kansas has numerous state lakes (picrel) with free camping available to the traveling public; to the best of my knowledge, no other state in America has such a generous arrangement for travelers. The US highways in Kansas are in great condition, and while outsiders stereotype Kansas as a flat state, it's actually quite hilly, with plenty of trees in the dales. I drove through Independence KS last year and the downtown bars were advertising happy hour specials, 99 cent wings and $2.50 drafts like it was still 2015. Overall, Kansas is a pleasant state that doesn't pretend to be anything special.
