It literally was though in the late 2000s to the 2010s? Both franchises went through "retro revivals" since classic era fans hated the modern titles and wanted something akin to the classic games. The only difference is that the Sonic franchise managed to recover from this as Sega/Sonic Team realized that classic era fans were actively killing interest in the Sonic brand since children/young teens did not care for Sonic Mania nor Lost World/Forces/Colors/Sonic 4. Meanwhile Capcom hasn't as shown with Megaman 11 and that they're too busy with Monster Hunter slop.
