They give you this at the start, they just don't have the opening implemented. Either they plan to change the battle that leads to you showing up in colhen or they just put him in there as a nod to the intro for the alpha.
I'm pretty sure he had no plot significance other than eventually finding out it was verafim controlling him and causing him to go crazy.
