Artists are (were) the gatekeepers of culture. They know it, and they flaunt it. That's why they have massive egos a lot of the time. But reducing barrier of entry destroys that elitism, and their relevance along with it. That's why they seethe.
It's what gunpowder weapons were to bows. Becoming an archer was a massive undertaking, you needed years to train, practice and master. And it was undeniably better than early gunpowder weapons, which took barely any skill to use, but a lot of effort to manufacture. Tell me, what happened to archers, and what happened to guns? That's the future for art, as well.
