Nothing went wrong, the series is still going strong, but it lost its prestige with the release of AC Unity, then Syndicate (very underrated) failed to get people's attention foreshadowed the death of the series.
They made a comeback with Origins but it's responsible for people's modern perception of Asscreed as slop games that are too big, too bloated and only good for historical tourism.
The thing about modern Asscreed games is that they are just good enough to not make you quit outright and the world interesting enough to make you want to explore it and visit all the historical places, so even if you are very critical of the games, and at their core they aren't very good, it's hard to resist.
