like how Trigun ended, Vash feels pain when he kills people, but he still shot Legato for the sake of protecting Livio. That was actually a satisfying development for a pacifism protagonist, sometimes there are just people that you gotta kill, doesn't turn you into a bloodlusting phycho murder anyhow (Kenshin did this part pretty bad cause he is literally not supposed to kill anybody because of a promise and it turns him back into a psycho murder)
