They really fucked up with this one. When I played through it the first time, they made it out like the hyper mode was really dangerous and I shouldn't use it too much, or I'd risk full corruption.
But, there is actually almost 0 risk to using it. You inject an energy tank, but you are invulnerable to anything while roided up and your damage output is many times higher than normal.
Most likely you would have just taken enough damage to deplete the energy tank you could have used for hyper mode and enemies will drop health anyway, so that is not a problem.
What I didn't understand the first time I played was that it was always on a set timer. Even if you activate it and do nothing, you can not get corrupted and game over. The game will automatically exit out of hyper mode after a while.
It also meant that bosses were all very tanky to compensate for your increased damage output. It didn't help that almost all of them took place in the same arena and were mostly just ''Shoot at it until it dies'' rather than the almost puzzle like bosses from Prime 2.
I don't think it's a bad game, but it certainly is the worst one in the trilogy.
