It's someone who oppose another person through different means, when it comes to Knuckles, he's the rival to Sonic in ideological terms. Knuckles feel he has a sense of duty and responsibility to Sonic's freedom. Back then they'd clash against each other but eventually like the song Unknown From Me had "Don't approve of him, but gotta trust him." They're on good terms though.
