I don't think it's that complicated I think they just don't want to put a bunch of heavy ass canon or put that kind of definition on their character dynamics. Mario beats somebody's ass to rescue the princess then they go play tennis or go-karting. There's not going to be a scene where Peach ruminates about Mario having PTSD after fighting Bowser like a bazillion times because they don't want to create a canon that makes it difficult for people to jump in or feel like they have to play Super Mario 1-63 before they play Super Mario 64.
It's like people reading way too much into Mario Odyssey's ending instead of just taking it at face value that Mario was just being obnoxious just to get one more win over Bowser and Peach wasn't having any of that.
