>Undertale comes out and people like it, tons of discussion on /v/ and other places on the internet, it becomes regarded as one of, if not the single greatest game ever made
>Middle period where the game is now suddenly hated and viewed as overrated, people pretending they never actually liked it and start complaining about "muh fanbase", others eventually start saying that those who complain about the fanbase are worse than the fanbase itself, more ironic and absurd memes spawn during this time
>Latter period has people come back around to it and talk about it fondly, it isn't considered the best or worst thing ever created anymore but the general consensus is that it's a pretty good game
Why does it seem like nearly every popular game follows this pattern?
It's why I don't think you can truly judge if a game is good or not until enough time has passed, it either gets praised or hated much more than it deserves, oftentimes both, during the first few years after coming out.
