Consider Pinkie Pie. I'd bet most anons would agree that she's the closest to "embodying" her element (except maybe Twilight but her element is weird anyway). But even with her over the top wacky personality, Pinkie isn't always laughing. She can be sad, insecure, angry, prideful, even inconsiderate. In other words, she's mortal. A mortal mare with an exceptional disposition towards spreading laughter and cheer, which is why she was chosen. She possessed a great capacity for the requisite virtue, but that doesn't mean it totally defines her or that she won't fail to fully live up to the ideal on occasion.
