There's no picking and choosing here. Science is an institution. You can compartmentalize and separate science as an institution from the actual practice of science itself. I would not make the argument that science is the end-all-be-all of truth either because scientists (academics) are not exactly known for being the most in touch as that entire world of academia carries its own ecosystem with its own respective inertia.
