Voldermort was born because his mother was a squib (can't perform magic but can create potions, shit like that) and fell in love with a rich man. Made him fall in love with her with the love potion, got pregnant, and once pregnant she thought he would stay with her. She was wrong, got kicked out, gave birth and died homeless. Harry Potter has at least one other scene where a witch at hogwarts tries to spike Harry with a love potion in some chocolates, but Ron eats them instead.
