Valve shot their shot last year and the hype is gone. A game that already has their twitch/mainstream hype behind it, usually at release, rarely manages to peak the same or even more again. It probably will have a small spike when they release 1.0 or whatever the upcoming stable version might be called, but they'll never reach more than a few thousand players again.
