Americans have always hated Japan and anything Japanese. People who like Japan and Japanese stuff are a relatively recent thing in America, they only really started appearing in the 1980s but were always a small minority that got shamed and bullied for it until somewhat recently. Now there's a lot of younger people who are into Japanese stuff, but even for them it's still merely a superficial interest into heavily-localized/sanitized media and those same people are often very quick to make jokes about Hiroshima/Nagasaki or parrot untrue anti-Japanese propaganda like claiming "Japan never apologized for muh war crimes!"
