Something, or at least the one following Sunny, is what Sunny and Basil saw when they looked back at Mari's hanged corpse. A looming shadow with one eye staring at them. Basil saw it, too. It was something behind Sunny that made his friend do the terrible things he knows that he would never have done. He definitely saw it. I'm not sure if Sunny and Basil were having the exact same hallucinations, but they must have been very similar in nature considering how they both act and what they both saw.
