The answer to that is very simple. We have to hold the language to a standard common to all people speaking the different dialects of that language. The most obvious way to do that would be to prefer the spelling used before dialects diverged, modifying it when it's necessary to reflect global changes. If you do this you will respect the inner etymological rules of the language but it will imply in modifying loan words and therefore "disrespecting" the etymology of foreign words.
