In the Bible, the religion of God, originally called Hebrewism was taken up by Abraham's son Israel, and his twelve sons which would be known as the twelve tribes. So, the practioners of the religion became known as Israelites. These Israelites are the Chosen People of God.
Now, God sent His son to earth to lead the Israelites. Those that continued to follow God and the Messiah would later be colloquially called "Christians" but they are the Israelites. The ones that scorned God and Christ, largely Edomites and Canaanites, would name themselves Jews.
It should be noted, that the modern Jew has virtually no DNA pairing him with the tribe of Judah, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. But the Canaanites like to use familiar names that are important to the Israelites/Christians to trick them. Sneaky Jews being expelled from land after land and child sacrifice/blood rites are the providence of these Canaanites naming themselves "Jews", not the ancient biblical Israelites.
This occurred again when the nation-state of Israel was formed. The Canaanites knew that Christians would conflate the biblical Israel with this new nation that happened to have the same name, and the Canaanites could take advantage of the Christian faith.
And Ted Cruz shows they were exactly correct. Ted doesn't know that Israel is literally the Christian Church, and that his endorsement of the Bhaal-worshipers in the nation-state of Israel is a violation of his faith and scripture.
