I'm more inclined to attribute it to just personal feelings from either the Director(s) and/or writer. The overwhelming prevalence of lopsided relationships is already pretty strange for these shows, but Director Fujisaki talking in an interview about his belief that people can't really change struck me as being a diametrically opposed belief to what is typical in the genre. It's an almost borderline pessimistic combo, which I think is quite interesting.
