I think compared to a lot of games of it's genre and coming out of Japan KH is very good so it surprises me it has a reputation of being badly written. I think people mistake the earnestness and mystery for bad writing. Reminds me a little bit of some of the hokey dialogue in the original Star Wars films or Twin Peaks. There's always a group of people who reject that kind of style and label it as bad. Kingdom Hearts is fine for what kind of story it is.
Even if the plot can get a little busy at times or the dialogue is off because of localization the emotional core is always there imo so even if people do get a little lost they still care about the characters I don't think there's ever been a big narrative decision Nomura and co have made that's pissed me off either. And honestly it's a miracle the story is in as good as a state as it is across 20 years and multiple games on different platforms, there aren't many game series with as interconnected a story as these.
