Between Xehanort, Ventus, Riku and Sora I'd say it's ultimately Sora but they all play a role in influencing his journey. I think Xehanort believed he was the Child of Destiny up until an unknown point where he believed it to be Ventus. Idk if he gave up being the Child because he'd embraced the darkness instead. By the time he's Apprentice Xehanort he sends Kairi away in search of the keyblade wielder too so idk if he believed he was searching for Ventus again there or somebody new like Riku.

So he'd hoped to bring forth the Child of Destiny while pursuing his own goal of purging the world with Kingdom Hearts should they fail to defeat the darkness. Although then he seemed to lose faith in the Child of Destiny prophecy putting a lot of his chips on purging the world. Maybe because Ventus and Riku had both proven to be failures and he didn't even really acknowledge Sora. And in the end he bequeaths Sora the X-blade which could be him entrusting him with the Child of Destiny legacy.

Should also add that in Star Wars there's also some debate and vagueness around the Chosen One prophecy so it wouldn't surprise me if it's the same in KH. George Lucas planned for Leia to be the chosen one in his sequel movies. So in the end Anakin, Luke and Leia would've all been the chosen one from different points of view in a holy trinity kind of way. Likewise Xehanort, Sora and Riku could all be Children of Destiny. But in Xehanort's case it does seem kind of forced because he wasn't even born on Destiny Islands.

There's also the scapegoat thing which is underexplored. Luxu mentions that in his report about a keyblade wielder with an affinity for darkness. And there's mention of a dark seeker in Dark Road like that's in the Book of Prophecies. Luxu says at the end of DR Xehanort is no Child of Destiny but that he could still be useful. And I think at some point Xehanort realized he was destined to be the scapegoat/dark seeker too. Idk if there's much of a story reason behind it but it's been pointed out that Xehanort in his youth wears the crown keyblade armor but in 3 he's gone full goat. So visually it seems like he shifted roles given crowns are usually associated with Sora. It's like Xehanort used to see himself as the future ruler/king of Kingdom Hearts but then accepted he was the demonic goat almost.

I don't really understand what the Heartless are supposed to be in terms of their roll and how they really act. Like, are they just supposed to be like Pennywise where they look and act cartoony and goofy to lure people in or are they supposed to be feral monsters? What about who controls them, are they more like dogs or like goofy incompetent mooks? Specially after 2 where it seems vauge on who really controls the heartless their personalities seem all over the place from acting like cartoons to seriouse threats. Are we supposed to see them as an organized force being commended or just monsters roaming the land.

They may look cartoony and goofy but they are supposed to be terrifying. In fact if you go by the ones in Quadratum the whole "disney aesthetic" is simply how they are percieved in the world to match their aesthetics and the ones in quadratum are how they would look like in real life, that is to say, demons. The heartless aren't controlled by anyone by defaul, they're feral monsters. Someone who is deep into darkness can control them but they always the risk of going to far into darkness and getting eaten themselves. They were organized in KH1 because Malifcent led them and maybe Ansem. After that they were led by the organization to make havoc, more heartless and potentially Nobodies and to attract sora so he could kill them . On their own they're monsters that go after hearts but are significantly less threatening, mostly because they act on instinct as aforementioned and tend to not roam TOO much. But significantly less doesn't mean not threatening, as the time they were most active was when being led by Malifecent which almost caused the end of the world. All on their own they can still easily gather up swarms in the hundreds because they're almost literally everywhere. In San Fransokyo people were straight up evacuating the city because they appeared there and the news reports said tons of people disappeared(got turned into heartless)

I really doubt it's the last game because 4 is being made in the midst of Square's reboot phase which they said it'll be a slower period for releases and obviously cancelling Missing-Link was part of this restructure. When they get started on the awaken phase I bet they'll put a new KH game into development as part of that initiative. Whether that's KH5 or another spinoff I don't know but hopefully the company-wide rejuvenation jolts some life into the series. It wouldn't make sense to suddenly end the series on the cusp of that.

Tbh though it always feels like Square is "restructuring" after some big financial dud. It happened after Spirits Within in the early 2000s and it happened again after FFXV with VII Remake supposedly being the start of a new era only for them to reboot again. At least every decade. And all it does screw up the release schedules of games like KH.

Especially when 3's worlds varied in structure and scale. The level design was a cross between maps that felt more like KH1, KH2 or DDD. 4 might follow the same philosophy. Which I think is fine. Design the world in a way that best suits the story and gameplay instead of forcing them all to be open worlds or linear.

At least we got to see Larxene and Marluxia's Nobody classes in 3. Still sad about not getting Vexen, Lexaeus or Zexion's though.

I think compared to a lot of games of it's genre and coming out of Japan KH is very good so it surprises me it has a reputation of being badly written. I think people mistake the earnestness and mystery for bad writing. Reminds me a little bit of some of the hokey dialogue in the original Star Wars films or Twin Peaks. There's always a group of people who reject that kind of style and label it as bad. Kingdom Hearts is fine for what kind of story it is.

Even if the plot can get a little busy at times or the dialogue is off because of localization the emotional core is always there imo so even if people do get a little lost they still care about the characters I don't think there's ever been a big narrative decision Nomura and co have made that's pissed me off either. Well it's been a while since we've seen a Heartless kill a rando on screen like that I think but otherwise I don't see the disconnect desu. Union Cross and Dark Road seem pretty deep and dark to me. What with Strelitzia being murdered in front of us; a character we'd actually spent some time with unlike the random dude in Traverse Town. And there's all the other keyblade wielders being killed in those games on top of the implication Luxu stole the body of a child with Bragi. Also Xehanort fearing his ability to feel the emotions in the hearts of others will lead him to become numb over time; saying he fears nothingness (depression) more than darkness. And don't forget 0.2 was a real happy time with Aqua in the Realm of Darkness.

I think the main console games that have released in the 2010s though are a bit lighter on that but only because Dream Drop Distance and KH3 are both basically big event stories and don't have the time to do too much emotional deep diving or character development. It's more about moving the plot forward so Nomura can wrap up the Dark Seeker Saga. But KH3 still had the Final World and the talking stars which was very raw. And Sora basically fighting Death itself in the Lich really and sacrificing his own life to save Kairi.

Would explain why nothing has really leaked then. If this stuff was just sitting on a server it would've come out by now I think. But if only a small group actually downloaded the stuff and a slightly bigger group have either seen it or heard and were told to keep quiet it makes sense. I think we're going back to her roots now, she's last seen colluding with one of the new big bads for starters whereas since 1 she'd been on the outside of things with the Organization. Although even if she plays a bigger villainous role on par with the first game there's a chance she'll be betrayed by Darkness like Ansem did if she does end up working with them like in UX. But she was already a more significant threat in Coded and Union Cross compared to her glorified sideplots where she doesn't even fight in 2, DDD and 3.

It'd be a surprise twist if she did get one over on Darkness and the Lost Masters and becomes the final threat. Like it's a situation where the other threats have been defeated and you think it's over only for her and Pete to show up and take the number one villain spot and she's the real final boss becoming some kaiju sized dragon Heartless. Or she merges with her own darkness to become a super Heartless. If the Queen of Hearts has her own Darkness that's grown inside her in Dark Road shouldn't Maleficent have one too? This is a headscratcher for me. Kairi & Ven's bodies became comatose because they lack darkness, thus Namine not using Kairi's body. The games probably do outright say Roxas is made from Sora's body, so occam's razor defaults to that, but they sometimes lie and I don't think him turning into a heartless proves anything.
Dunno if Sora's body remained with him or Kairi in some weird metaphysical way while he was a heartless, but if Roxas and Namine are mostly Ven/Kairi then that would account for Ven's heart and almost explain where the third body for Sora came from. Roxas & Namine being born from the same process without bodies also covers why neither of them appeared in the grand hall.
Why Sora's body didn't create a nobody would probably have something to do with using the KB of hearts willingly and retaining his mental function like Ansem, or just Kairi's princess abilities. Maybe Roxas & Namine using up his darkness in their creation has something to do with it since they aren't pure lights. Idk I'm just spitballing here.

If Vexen was correct in that in new replicas bodies, the people are human in every way, then Roxas, Namine, and Xion would be capable of procreation. So Roxas can become a father, and Namine and Xion could become mothers. Had Riku Replica taken the empty vessel, the same would be true for him.

I still think the Naminé = Ava theory is still plausible because of two reasons: The whole Nobody anomaly was solved in Roxas's case since we learned that Ven's heart residing in him was the reason he was born in his image, the same can be true for Naminé. Imagine KH2 opening up and we're suddenly playing as "Sora" but in a completely different setting without Donald and Goofy around and people are just casually calling him Roxas. I do wonder if the characters the Foretellers seem to echo are meant to factor into MoM's "safety plan" when it comes to using his apprentices as vessels for Darkness. Maybe each Lost Master will require a keyblade wielder with a strong enough heart to be the true backup vessels that need to be sacrificed to destroy Darkness for good, hence why the only way to defeat Darkness in MoM's eyes is to travel to the future where these perfect vessels exist. Aqua, Terra and Riku have definitely built a strong resistance to Darkness which would probably allow them to become vessels without losing themselves to it. Ventus already has Vanitas though so Gula would have to go for Sora or Roxas.

The first Zootopia seems like a probable pick for 4. Any Foreteller could appear there with the animal theming. Although Ira has that hidden rage I think which kind of fits with the predators going savage and Bellwether hiding her true nature.

I don't think any Foreteller is going to meet Sora until V. Maybe Ava to warn him about what's to come. I think this outing for Sora will be more about self-reflection, rather than thwarting evil.

They could go the route of 1 and focus on the Disney villains and Maleficent more only to reveal some of the Lost Masters during the endgame segment similar to Ansem SoD. But much like Ansem was only part of Xehanort the Lost Masters aren't wholly defeated.

They could present Maleficent and True Darkness as the main threats and just have the Lost Masters observing from the shadows for most of it, then the Foretellers swoop in at the end to help Sora finish Darkness off but afterwards he starts to realize they're not the good guys. I do think about how they left the fate of one Darkness vague.

A Return of the Jedi world could also feature Jabba's Palace + Sail Barge and Dagobah, not just Endor and the Death Star 2. Plus Yoda appears as a force ghost on Endor at the end of the movie anyway. Depends how big the individual worlds are though; four distinct maps might be doable for SW if they aren't too large, Dagobah doesn't have much going on besides Yoda's hut and the Cave of Evil. Kind of working off the blueprint of Olympus in 3 which had three separate regions in Thebes, Mount Olympus and Realm of the Gods.

I'm curious if Lucasfilm will force Square to fit Sora's visit within the canon somehow so similar to Toy Box and Arendelle he's not allowed to interact with the main plot of the films but they can fit things between eg. Vader having some encounter with Sora at nightfall before Luke arrives to give himself up to the Emperor. There's a part of me that likes that because of how KH is sort of canon to Toy Story now between the first two films, or at least you can imagine it is. Throwing Sora in there as a participant in the Battle of Endor and nerds having to add that to the Wookieepedia page would be funny to me.

BBS and DDD are objectively equal in importance, yet the latter feels less so to me, and I don't know why. Maybe just the nature of BBS being a prequel to KH1, while DDD is just another subtitle game that takes place post-2 and pre-3. But BBS stars side characters, while DDD stars Sora and Riku.

It has some stuff that I like, but it's also the weirdest. Having the ability to sense darkness manifest as a scent was an odd choice they clearly recognized because later on it's just something characters can feel ala Star Wars. Would've made sense on a more beastly character. With Riku it went from weird to creepy in some scenes.

I liked the idea that darkness had a physical quality like smell. "Feeling" it is a sensation that you can't really imagine and it's hard to quantify any character's capacity to do this.

Think about it like this, DiZ didn't steal the hearts of everyone in Traverse Town to make the simulation. He used data that he gleaned from their hearts to do it. How he did that, I don't know.

I mean it's fanfic so it is a little wish fulfilment. I think it seems more elaborate on the page but then I'm also working under the assumption the worlds in 4 could be longer because of Nomura implying there'll either be the same amount as 3 or less. I tried structuring similarly to Olympus with how that moved between three regions within the world and gave us interactions with Maleficent and Pete, Xigbar and Hades in each as well as numerous bosses. I do think it's more likely that it'll just be Endor and the Death Star. And other KH worlds split themselves into two distinct regions like KH2 Olympus and Halloween Town. So you have the organic vs mechanical theme in having the moon and battle station which is a big thing in SW and echoes light and darkness.

I agree that they'll probably avoid conflicting with the movie's plot much at all but then compared to other films KH has adapted I think you can still tell an interesting story in Star Wars without recreating the story of ROTJ verbatim. The world is fleshed out enough that SDG can exist on the periphery and it still be engaging and impactful. And hopefully succeed where Arendelle failed. Plus I think if they really wanted to they could squeeze in some fun stuff like a SDG vs Vader fight since he's on Endor for a short period before Luke gives himself up.

Hot take maybe but I think it's a better narrative sequel to 1 than 2. Like you said it develops Sora and Riku further and takes them to interesting places. 2 is more focused on the Roxas and Organization XIII mystery while Sora and Riku's arcs get less attention, and Kairi is sidelined even more. Obviously 3 is guilty of this as well because it has to deal with so much other stuff in it's story and DDD wasn't able to hit the same notes as CoM either despite being a similar premise.

It builds off CoM fine there just isn't as much to do with it at that point. I'm not sure what they'll come up with for Riku in KHIV if anything. Not sure if there's anywhere else for his character to go now considering how at peace he is from the offset in 3. I would like to see him help someone else struggling with darkness. Whether that's Sora himself or somebody new. There was a small moment of that in 3 where he's facing Anti-Aqua and he says he has plenty of his own misery and despair in his heart like her.

I think SENA botched the localization again because in the Goldpanner translation MoM says humans want to believe in the afterlife essentially not "the future" but they obfuscate that like they call Quadratum an "afterworld" in the KH4 trailer when Strelitzia outright uses the word death in Japanese. It's strange because they're allowed to use the word death in Dark Road with Hades. I'm not sure if it's different teams or what but it continues to be lame much like them using lifeboat and not Ark.

Fair enough, but there's no canon distinction of where arcs begins/end. I'd say its subjective until we know how the writers are framing it.

I definitely read the 3/MoM scenes as them keeping him a major character going forward, but I guess it could turn out like you said. another side was a similar situation and ended up with him pushed to background events.
