I'd give it more credit than that. They way they use the drunken night out to peel back their true feelings about how they've changed (or more specifically how they think they've changed), while Gary basically stays the same from beginning to end is very well done. There's all sorts of nice allegories about growing up and embracing middle age in there. Great film.
