There's definitely more action silliness in the second half, but it is a comedy film and there is still plenty of depressing, aging melancholy. It's my favourite of the cornetto trilogy despite Hot Fuzz being an objectively tighter and better executed movie.

It's a good film in general but does a genre switch.
The second part is the actual genre (comedy Sci fi action) but the first half is the just funnier because it doesn't need the action portions

I like the way the second half devolves into nonsense, the way a night out getting properly blasted does. I think it was deliberate to an extent to give the impression of the film itself getting progressively more drunk.

I'd give it more credit than that. They way they use the drunken night out to peel back their true feelings about how they've changed (or more specifically how they think they've changed), while Gary basically stays the same from beginning to end is very well done. There's all sorts of nice allegories about growing up and embracing middle age in there. Great film.
