Our system inevitably coalesces into two parties due to game theory. Alternative parties lead to the spoiler effect, which makes it advantageous for people to vote for the lesser of two evils. Casting a vote for a party that's unlikely to win is tantamount to throwing your entire vote away.
This is by design. It's an easy system for elites to manipulate.
The way to fix it is by introducing a multiple choice voting system where people can vote for an extremist candidate while listing the more mainstream candidate as a backup option.
If people could vote for Musk without effectively throwing their vote away and creating a spoiler effect, then he could actually win.
But why would tyrants give up their current system in favor of something that more accurately represents the will of the people?
