I actually like him for being a DK villain that isn't just "Bad guy who is more or less as big and strong as DK" for once. He's more of the physically weak schemer type villain, which the series didn't really have until now.
I also appreciate him for exiting the plot at the perfect time and letting K Rool have his grand return. I think the reception to Void Kong would be a lot more negative if he turned out to be the final boss with K Rool nowhere in sight.
