No, that was the fans who voted on him on Smash Ballot. Sakurai couldn't care less, especially because that, even selling decently, the DK franchise was considered legacy.

As how Sora won the ballot overall, K. Rool was technically on the top 5 and Bayo was the biggest on Europe and Ridley had a decent margin, if he wasn't even a Top 2, we can only assume that it was Nintendo who said to add those in Ultimate.

Considering everything, it was the few times where the fans had their voice heard in a Nintendo project.

I can’t lie from an outsiders perspective who’s only played 2 of the country games and returns on 3DS years ago it just seems like Nintendo didn’t like the fact a western studio basically revived one of their dying characters and were trying to stay as far away from kremlings as much as possible after rare got bought out.

With rare gone, they didn’t want the series to be seen as something some filthy gaijins helped shaped and transform so they had a hand in both of the revival games development and tried to make TWO new main villains for Tropical Freeze and Returns that of course didn’t have any staying power on top of not being memorable, so they just caved in and bought K Rool back

Oddly whenever General Klump got a focus episode is whenever it got the most emotional, they put their pathos into that southern sounding scaled lunkhead. Also the show is genuinely funny as much as it is unintentionally funny, like everyone fighting over a hidden treasure only for K Rool to find out it's rotten bananas DK burried as a kid...in hindsight he'd of been happy enough with that with what we now know about the crocs eating habits.

It's weird because they technically had no problems still using Rare's characters considering Diddy, Dixie, Cranky, Funky, Rambi and Squawks all show up in Retro's games and we even know Enguarde was seriously considered before being dropped, so it's not like there was a total ban on using Rare's stuff.

In retrospect, it was extremely fucking retarded that Nintendo needed to have an online popularity poll to figure out that the main antagonist of one of their most popular franchises was someone people loved and wanted to see again. And even then, it took until there was an entire dev team full of people that loved and played his games to finally get him back in a mainline game. A lot of these shot callers are extremely out of touch.

DK was a complete non-factor in this plan, hell fucking Void didn't even know K. Instead of K.Stompenklomper, they could have Klump act as a Grumpy Kong equivalent, then have Krusha later down the core act as a Poppy Kong clone. Finally maybe have Kutlass act as a void kong clone before the final boss against K.Rool.

I mostly like the Snowmads, I think Fredrik is lame and hate the rabbits faces but Skowl, Bushmaster and Pompy are great plus the Tucks are just neat. If they did another new villain faction for DK I think dinosaurs/prehistoric animals might be fun since you could have DK finally fight a T-Rex since ape vs dinosaur is a classic rivalry like dog vs cat or Mongoose vs snake

I don't think Nintendo hated Rare, in one interview Miyamoto even referred to them as rivals, which according to my shonen mangas is high praise. But while they respected them on a technical level I don't think they understood the charm Rare added to their characters. But with Bananza I think the younger developers who were fans of these characters have more control and they're going all out with the fanboy stuff.

I actually like him for being a DK villain that isn't just "Bad guy who is more or less as big and strong as DK" for once. He's more of the physically weak schemer type villain, which the series didn't really have until now.
