> Which at least seem to work for most players and game critic media types
It means nothing. BG3 also received a ton of praise from both players and critics, but the game is mediocre in every aspect and is several orders of magnitude inferior to Rogue Trader, which came out the same year.
> but you gotta at least give the game credit
I'm not denying that it's decent. I just don't consider it the greatest creation or even a masterpiece. It's just OK.
> I'm not sure how much of it was accidental, given that Deltarune doesn't really have themes
The couch scene in the weird route is literally better than all of this. Deltarune is better written and better structured. Plus, the interaction between the player and the character while maintaining agency is not the most trivial aspect in the gaming industry. The fourth-wall breaking from the player's perspective is a very rare phenomenon, which makes Deltarune's value higher.
