Correct! Even I don't get why some people call this couple canon, it isn't and it will never be at this rate for the exact reasons you point out. At most you can say the couple "is more likely to be than not" or "might as well be", but just because the pair is well within the realm of possibility, doesn't mean it is a settled, canonical pair.
