It's a mix of Toby wanting Deltarune to be contemporary and having topical commentary and him wanting Dess to be a typical 90s teenager since he's obviously drawing from his own experience of them being a 90s kid himself. Problem is it does look too big a gap. But then the world doesn't need to match the real world anyway.

Though on that note... Yeah the game mentions the year 1997.... so does does that mean Deltarune has its own Jesus. Or else, 1997 years after what exactly?
