Soviet Union in 1989 collapsed because instead of locking everyone up in prison, they let them out. Russia had no civilizational precedent to deal with it. China does and keep it going forever. In 1989 they just did what North Korea did. For a self-proclaimed expert on China he doesn't seem to know about their laogai and laojiao gulag system and the fact he doesn't mention it at all means his theories are bunk.
