The hiring and firing of managers is the job of the general manager. Cashman hired Boone and gave him an extension. The problem is not Boone. The biggest problem is Cashman, and it's not even close. Hal needs to fire Cashman, and that is never happening because Cashman's father had strong ties to Hal's father, and because Cashman has been working for the Steinbrenners nearly his entire life including in other capacities prior to working for the Yankees such as being the manager of the Steinbrenner thoroughbred racing stable.
As long as Cashman is allowed to remain within the Yankees organization, the Yankees farm system will continue to be abysmal, the Yankees will continue to overspend on under-productive players, and the Yankees will never win a championship.
