why are you in denial of sports being practiced for recreation? many pro athletes also don't earn shit at all yet simply want to be the best, they want to work hard and have it pay off, out-skill their opponents, and be written in history books. fighters especially know they will never get rich off it with the exception of boxers, they sacrifice their health for the joy and glory of fighting. most olympians according to studies would give up half of their life in trade of reaching their goals.
