I'm working on a first draft and would appreciate feedback on the quality of my prose. This is part of the opening. I'm kind of just making it up as I go along, which has kept me engaged in my own story.

A basic premise in my plot is that magic can only be used through previously enchanted objects, and it is extremely tedious to do those enchantments. Within the magical community, there is a tradition of people trying to find a way to enact magic instantaneously. The protagonist's friend got involved with these people, died after meeting them and casting instantaneous magic, and she goes on a quest to get revenge pretty much.
