they definitely did pretend to be connected to the real UC from the point they dredged up the elmeth up until the last episode. They only stopped in the last episode with that remake of the Gelgoog+Elmeth vs Gundam fight where Char dies instead of Lalah. Vague mumblings from *a different universe's Lalah* about how she has a recurring nightmare of amuro killing char did not solidly establish this was an AU.
And why did they play the outro music from CCA if the "alt UC" characters all left their home universes well before CCA would have even happened? They had so many opportunities to have fun here, they could've brought in the Hi-Nu or Anno's rejected Nu design from the 80s in all fairness it was a terrible design but it would've made for a far better memberberry than giant RX-78-03 or something completely unexpected.
If the "UC" is going to be an AU that strongly resembles the UC why not run with this opportunity to play loose with canon and do something fun? That was supposed to be the whole premise of GQX anyways. People love a good alt-universe (in the usual scifi sense of the word not what gundam usually calls an AU) because the writers run wild with all sorts of crazy things they could never do in the mainstream UC, just look at the mirror universe in star trek.
