I think this is the most common mistake people make when playing and I only avoided it because I remembered a video Magical did years ago where the same thing happened to him.

I haven't read the translation for volume 2 yet but going off the illustrations we did miss out on a "sharing body heat survive the cold" scene. I'll only forgive them for cutting that thanks to a nice scene you'll get to at the halfway point of the game. The catgirl church cult is also definitely from the novels.
