Season 1 is easily the weakest in the franchise because it's pretty much just "waow Suzuka-chan so cool" alongside a perpetual dosage of cute girls near-exclusively doing cute things. There's almost no real stakes to any of the racing, because the focus is all in on the friendship between Spe and Suzuka. And I understand Japan loves Silence to the point they just outright changed the story; so his anime girl counterpart DIDN'T get euthanized right there on the course without hesitation (the leg fracture was that bad), but it leaned way too far into orbiting around Suzuka as a character to the detriment of no other Uma besides Special Week even really being developed across all 13 episodes. Everybody else was window decoration.
To be honest though, being able to say "S1 is the weakest" is both a good and rare thing for a franchise, because it's been nothing but mostly ups ever since. Season 3 is still better than S1, people are just disappointed about it because it's not as good as S2. Road to the Top and Beginning of a New Era were both great, and Cinderella Gray's adaptation so far has been top notch. Then you have the simple fact that each season is so disconnected from one another that you can comfortably skip S1 and it'll have borderline zero impact on your experience with every other series outside of a handful of visual call-backs to the S1 cast.
