No anon, it's not about making textures uglier/low res or what engine you use. It's about capturing that special feel that those "soulful" games gave you, when you first experienced them. But for that you need to study what gave them this "soulful" feeling. Using a high res viewmodel with pixelated environment will not give you any soul, more a mere mockery of it. And then there's more to soul than the graphical aspect. Think back what you liked about those games and try to do your best to capture this feeling, no matter what engine or artstyle you use. Cheers!
