I mean, yeah, that's the point. I must be insane, because William's thought process makes perfect sense to me. He tried to live the life he wanted to, and his whole family turned on him for it. Now, he's living the life they want him to. But if he's going to be miserable, why should he bother making anyone else happy? If he can't marry the woman he loves, if he must attend stifling parties, if he has to be a model aristocrat, then he will. But why should he go about it in a way that makes the people putting him in that position feel good? They'll get what they asked for, and they'll feel like shit for it.
