Its been awhile since ive seen Macross but from what I remember Hikaru wasnt being wishy washy Unless your standard for being that is the cringe betalord idea of saying he likes her which is gonna creep a girl out He was actively asking her out and trying to have a good time with her but her career kept cockblocking him by putting her in situations Hikaru could barely coordinate with due to his job as a soldier.

Any girl would flat out knows what was going on and its stupid to make excuses for her.
It wasnt until the end where it led her to Kaifun trashing her career and leaving her that she "got" it. But luckily Hikaru fucking realized after episodes of neglect that she wants to live in an utterly different world and communicated that he doesnt want to put up with a life of a girl who has a job that demands so much of her time.

Macross was a story about a guy figuring out a bitch is for the streets. Its not a genuine love triangle.
