I think they're just reimagining the spectacle of the original season arcs in new context.
So Sorin's schizo time jumps were analogous to Glimmer's Time jumps.

Both the clown and hood figments are equivalent to Discord and Tirek, I think.

I believe Celestia named dropped Sombra. So he'll be his own character, like Chrysalis if he ever shows up. But he might not be involved in a "Crystal Heart" arc.

I think we're moving into MLP:The Movie territory. And the Cutie "Map" adventures. With sea ponies/equestria and other "creatures". But we haven't really seen Crystal Ponies.

In the Tamer-verse we've got Wall Flower on a prison planet. (with the time reversals, I lost track of if she still alive or not)
Wall Flower might be a stand-in for Cozy Glow. She had an anti-magic field equivalent to the Changeling Hive.

Instead of Flurry Heart, Shining Armor might have a kid with Chrysalis.
And without her and glimmer, We probably won't see Sunburst.
And Sunburst was something of a segway into the Pillars and StarSwirl.

Perhaps Sombra will be reimagined as a "Pillar", Combined with Stygian.
