They know they'll never have families, because everyone is utterly insane and broken, and they have to work like dogs just to barely stay afloat. It's a defence mechanism against despair. Can't mourn not having kids if you convince yourself that you never wanted any in the first place.

It's not their fault. Thats how the world was set up before they were ever born, with full malice of forethought.
