i used to love reading these books as a teenager, we had D&D 3.5 by then which was overly mathematical, but all the older books were fun to read through, just learning about some mad fantasy world.
they basically began with the premise that the Forgotten Realms is a pretty blank-slate setting, here's an overview of the world, its location, its movers and shakers. the whole POINT was "here's a world to play your elf games in, it's not our story" and then they went ahead and wrote those Drizz't novels and mad them Baldur's Gate games.
i'd get pwned by the hardcore grognards on /tg/, but i am correct. maybe one day i will have odd friends and we can play an OSR game.
