A game... should never, EVER become a tedious slog. The whole point of a game is to be fun. In the immortal words of Reggie, "If it's not fun, why bother?" Neither Zelda game should have ever turned into tedious slogs, and the motivation of "beat Ganon" can only go so far. I, personally, couldn't be bothered to fight the final boss of either game for the longest time after burning out on the majority of their content. But that's neither here, nor there.
The point is that DK doesn't need a sidekick with a deeper reason to go to the center of the earth. All he needs is "There are bananas in the earth. You can wish for all the bananas at the core. There are bad guys who want to get your wish first to take over the world." Bam. All the reason anyone could need to collect stuff, beat levels and bad guys.
