I work with disabled people for a living, and I used to work with a family with deaf sons. People VASTLY underestimate how much a disability can fuck you over, especially if you don't have the income for things like quality hearing aids or cars with wheelchairs in mind. It is not a quirky or advantageous thing. It makes life harder.
Pic related is the ONLY example of a main character being disabled and STAYING that way. Even when he gets superpowers, he's still fucking disabled. He even feels like a believable person in terms of becoming disabled and how he feels about it
