If we're heading towards the big freeze, then that's what will happen. Galaxy groups will merge into gigantic supergalaxies and voids will become supervoids.
If our theories are correct that is. But the fact that dark flows exists and is pulling galaxies outside of the observable universe puts some holes in most of our theories.
