I haven't tried crossing the map with just the towers, but there are multiple parts where you would need at least an extra wheel of stamina, protection from the elements and a few other things to actually activate them.
It doesn't avoid that you'll still need to travel the roads between them for caves, quests and whatever else is tucked away. It's no all apparent from the sky.
