another book i highly recommend on the topic.. goes into a very deep analysis on how media affects the working class and to a lesser extent middle class in the early 20th century..
also provides a deep portrait of the lives of british working class in that age, and the changes technology and media have had on the subcultures that exist in it and concerns of how distractions and cheap entertainment are dissolving interesting and authentic cultural institutions for a monocultural element that means nothing

buy an e-reader, (kobo so you can use epub format) go to open-slug.org download every book you could ever want to read.
then become a devout reader, philosophy, history, fiction, non-fiction.. read it all and pretend everything else is beneath you.
eventually it all will be beneath you.. seems to be working for me at least.
