>Cloud would be better if he turned that frown upside down
Yes I was about to add that this isn't an expressions/animations problem. It's a model and art direction problem.
Jin, Kiryu, Cloud, Wolf etc. all have permanent frowns because their eye sockets are simply super deep. They can't have any other expression since that's their model/bone. Ziluan's character model "cheats" because when he frowns, the animation nodes on his eyes area either bulge the brow ridge or push the eyes in, like in OP's pic >>717507338 giving him more expressions when in and out of combat. Meaning when he's sad and you pull the model's brows on the outside it's more noticeable that he's emoting sadness - because his neutral face has normal eyes.

This problem of deep-set eyed characters stems from trying to translate cool anime eyes into realistic 3D models - it just doesn't work. It's also related to a fact that Japanese devs also love this type of look because most of them are Gen X/old Millennials that grew up with macho icons like Sugawara Bunta, Toshiro Mifune, Tatsuya Nakadai etc. which had deeper eyes than usual AND would constantly squint in their most iconic scenes in samurai and yakuza movies. Again this -can- work in manly characters like Kazuya Mishima, Jann Lee and Kiryu but it does not mesh well with young pretty boys like Cloud in realistic looking FF7 Remake. If everything was more anime and stylized, like in Kingdom Hearts, then his look wouldn't be so uncanny.

tl;dr Asian devs need to embrace the fact that they do not have strong brow ridges like their favorite 60s mob boss. Pic related, how they want to look on top and how they look when facescanned. They have neotenous Asian eyes and the sooner they embrace that the sooner they'll be able to shift to their peak performance advantages (their cute young looks) - which is what they did with Ziluan.
