I often ask for a specific court case where somebody obviously got put away because of gun accessories, especial a home defense case since those are weirdly often the source of lore. I've never gotten a citation. It's just a "commonly known fact" floating around in the aether.
You aren't going to end up prosecuted because of gun accessories. Prosecutions go forward usually because of the situation, and sometimes egged on specifically by political pressure. Having or not having a red dot isn't going to be a tipping point in starting court proceedings. If you do end up in court, then at that point everything will be spun against you. You had hollowpoints? Clearly a murderous killer looking to cause pain. You didn't have hollowpoints? You don't care about bullets flying off into the distance. You had a red dot? You're a wannabe military gun nut. You didn't have a red dot? You don't care about being accurate and are wildly firing everywhere. You literally can't have made a right choice according to the prosecutor at that point so you may as well not worry about it.
